Fringe Florida: Travels among Mud Boggers, Furries, Ufologists, Nudists, and Other Lovers of Unconventional Lifestyles - Lynn Waddell I received this book as an ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.I really enjoyed this book. I’ve always been interested in the different interests and lifestyles people seem to have, and it was fascinating getting a look at some of the fringe cultures in Florida. Some of the people involved were amazing, and I found myself engrossed in more than a few of the larger than life people that were brought to life in this book. I appreciated the respect the author had for the people, and groups she was profiling. Even when I felt the author didn’t understand a person or a group’s motivation she never treated them like freaks or abominations. I liked how much research the author did into the groups and people she profiled it gave the book an extra depth, and perspective, and I liked the history, culture, and wider perspective that this research added. The book felt grounded in the state of Florida, and it was interesting to see how this sense of place influenced the cultures that grew, and are growing there. The writing style was approachable, and I felt like I was able to get to know the author over the course of the story as well. I liked the friendlier tone it seemed to affect. It made it feel less like an academic tome, and more personal, and respectful of the people and groups profiled. Overall a well done, and really interesting book.
