Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1)

Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) - Susan Ee Dear book,Where have you been all of my life? I have been longing to read a young adult novel that isn't all about romance for so long. I was beginning to lose faith in the genre that seems to be all about love triangles, and girls doing nothing but pining over men who they think they can't have. I admire Penryn's blunt practicality. I like that she is willing to make hard, even morally questionable choices to protect her family. I like that the first thing she does when she is confronted with an injured angel is not to spend hours going on and on about how pretty he is, or how she feels instantly drawn to him, enemy of the human race, or not. I actually appreciate that she is willing to hurt him in order to find out where her sister has been taken. Sure, it's not nice, or kind, but they don't live a world that allows for that kind of luxury. That leads me to the setting. It was refreshing to read about a world after calamity has occurred that actually feels like it's falling apart. It actually felt as dark, and hard to make it as the book made it out to be. Sometimes these books try to sound bad, but nothing in them supports that all that much. This book doesn't pull any punches, and would not good for very sensitive readers. For the rest of us, it's nice to see that edge of brutality to a world in chaos. It feels more authentic to me.I liked the role of the Angels in this story. I felt suitably Old Testament without feeling preachy or moralistic at all. The Angels have some sort of goal, and I look forward to finding out more about the different factions, and what their plans are. It seems nicely complex and twisted from what I have seen from this book. The interaction between Raffe and Penryn is nicely done, and free of the instant love that seems to be so popular these days. I'm not saying that there isn't some attraction there, but Penryn isn't confusing love and lust. They travel together, and they have to learn about each other, and to begin to trust each other before things begin to change between them.I like that while there is still plenty of room for more the book didn't leave off at an artificial cliffhanger. I hate when it feels like a book ends a chapter early just to keep you reading. If the series is good enough people will keep reading no matter if you leave off in the middle of the action or not. I'm not against cliffhangers per say, but I hate when it happens in every book in a series. It makes me think it's a cheap ploy to hold on to readers. With engaging characters, excellent world building, and a nail biting plot this is one of the best young adult novels with a female lead I have read in ages.Thank you so much,A grateful Reader.
